Outreach programs are designed for students in grades 5-12. The cost of one 45-60 minute program is $125, but multiple programs on the same day are offered at a discounted rate – $110 each for two programs and $90 each for three or more. The Incredible Perception of Sound: The Art and Science of Auditory Perception
Students learn that things are not always as they sound, while exploring the intricacies of human perception. In small groups, they will experiment with a variety of materials, such as cornstarch, dried peas, cowbells, tissue paper and more to make as many sounds as they can. Students are encouraged to see objects not as they are, but as they could be. Each group will choose one of the familiar narrative passages provided and perform it for the class with the sound effects they have discovered. The class will then guess what created the sound effects for each team. Performances may be recorded, if time permits. Additional post-program activities can include students writing a sound dictionary of their own, including instructions on how to reproduce each sound they made.
